Sr. IT Manager Data Engineering (100% Virtual/Remote)

The Manager, Data Engineering is a leadership role on the IT Enterprise Data team, and you are responsible for building, maintaining, and improving data infrastructure that enables delivering analytical insights for the organization. This role reports to the Senior Director, Data Engineering. As part of an Agile team, you collaborate with enterprise architecture, security, digital applications, and Insights & Analytics teams as well as internal stakeholders, cross-functional teams, and external vendors. Together, you deliver strategies, tactical decisions, and hands-on execution of the design, implementation, and integration of data and tools. You ensure that we provide accurate, high-quality, high-performance data solutions needed for corporate decision-making capabilities. You manage a team of data professionals including data engineers, architects, quality assurance and partner with product owners, analysts, and other related developers, and scientists. You provide your team with valuable, timely coaching and development opportunities, as well as ensuring team resource levels and competencies support the needs of the organization. Through collaboration and team leadership, you support the execution of data management and governance, data storage, data transformation, data analytics, data literacy, and data quality initiatives. You establish standards for ensuring accurate data collection, processing, modeling, and analysis across the organization. Ideal candidate would have successful track record of managing data engineering teams in modern data technologies like Snowflake, DBT, Fivetran, Databricks and related cloud offerings. New Ways of Work: The work is completed 100% remote anywhere in the United States except Hawaii or United States Territories with potential travel of 20% required. Travel expectations are to be in Rosemont, IL one (1) week per month (Monday morning through Friday afternoon). Minimal travel to divisions and vendor seminars. Responsibilities In this role, we are looking for an independent self-starter who will play a key role designing our data landscape in partnership with data architects and product ownership. You will work across the organization to ensure that the data in our cloud data warehouse serves our enterprise strategies. The Senior Manager, Data Engineering role responsibilities below are framed around key performance areas. _Technical Acumen_ + Manage and lead technical design and development activities for implementation of large-scale data solutions in Snowflake to support multiple use cases (transformation, reporting and analytics, supply chain, finance, ecommerce, etc.) + Lead design and development of technology and data architectures to support business solutions leveraging best practices for cloud data warehouses + Translate business, integration, and analytics problems into technical designs; lead the team to implementation + Exhibit strong knowledge of the Snowflake ecosystem and clearly articulate the value proposition of cloud modernization/transformation to a wide range of stakeholders + Be an expert in data technologies that are in use at US Foods and have a point of view on competing or leading data technologies that US Foods does not use + Troubleshoots software and processes for data consistency and integrity + Ensure that all code is well structured, includes sufficient documentation, and is easy to maintain and reuse + Partner with internal teams to gain an enhanced understanding of business functions and data needs + Gain expertise in tools, technologies, and applications/databases in specific business areas and company-wide systems + Explain technical considerations at meetings, with internal and external partners and less experienced team members + Lead the testing of code thoroughly for accuracy of intended purpose + Designs and conducts training sessions on tools and data sources used by the team + Educate and develops junior data engineers on the team while applying quality control to their work _Talent Management_ + Ensure that teams are right-sized to meet current and future requirements in a cost-effective manner with capacity management + Manage consulting partners and contractors and ensure onboarding, access, and success for non-employees + Determine succession planning and career development for individuals + Support and cultivate the development of direct and indirect reports through performance management, coaching, overall effectiveness + Set performance standards, review performance, and make informed compensation decisions in accordance with all applicable HR policies and procedures + Skillfully manage teams with cultural awareness + Work and build support and teams within a matrixed organization _Relationship Management_ + Take responsibility and ownership for how/if stakeholders understand the enterprise data team, the benefits, and the journey that we're on for data transformation + Ensure service levels and performance expectations are met according to vendor agreements and US Foods' expectations. Partner to ensure that all deliverables in statements of work are executed + Evaluate vendor performance and be accountable for it. If vendor performance falters, create a plan for recovery or end the relationship appropriately with an agreed upon transition + Work with project and resource managers to ensure that vendor costs are aligned to the statements of work and entered appropriately into US Foods' systems _Financial and Contractual Expertise_ + Work with Senior Director to understand, negotiate and own agreements for IT services and products with vendors for the program + Monitor risk, audit potential and contractual obligations + Create, monitor, and manage departmental and project budgets + Account for costs and align spending with strategic objectives + Drive the approval and campaign for support of the initiatives included in the budget QUALIFICATIONS Education/Training: + 7+ years' experience in a data engineering role leading Enterprise Data transformations + 5+ years of hands-on leadership and people management experience, preferably leading team in an Agile/Scrum environment + BS Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline Related Experience/Requirements: + Experience working at a large organization with over $10B in revenue + Experience working on large scale enterprise data modernization projects + Experience building a product from ground up, working with business and project team to develop roadmap + Advanced understanding of Snowflake, Fivetran, DBT and related technologies + Experience implementing MDM tools, preferred + Experience leading data quality and data management practices + High degree of initiative and capacity to lead multiple priorities of significant scope in a fast-paced environment + Skillful in communicating with and influencing a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including executive leadership, employees, potential/existing customers, competitors, and business partners + Strong negotiation, organizational, presentation, writing, and verbal communication skills + Strong ability to solve problems with creative solutions + Demonstrated ability to manage adversity and challenging situations The following information is provided in accordance with the Colorado Pay Equity Act. Compensation depends on experience, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law. In Colorado, the expected compensation for this role is between $104,500 and $139,400. This role is also eligible for an annual incentive plan bonus.
