Job Description

The Sender Security and Authentication Product Group is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our backend team. This team is responsible for collecting data on Email Traffic, Threat Detections, Domains Registrations, IP Addresses, DNS Records, Senders, Suppliers, etc. and using aggregation, algorithms, and machine learning to construct a comprehensive data set to help our customers secure their electronic communications and stop the bad actors. We process more than 30-40TB of data per day, and use a combination of parallel processing, large scale aggregation, machine learning, and data warehousing technologies to feed data to analysts, customers, and other Proofpoint products. Identity Defense is undergoing explosive growth, and we need smart, motivated, and creative engineers to help stop scammers, phishers, and other attackers from using identity deception to compromise targets across the internet.

Your day-to-day

  • Participate in the product development process to ensure the best solution is brought to market
  • Work in a collaborative team-first environment
  • Develop scalable and reliable systems capable of processing terabytes of email data per hour
  • Optimize data processing, storage, and retrieval systems to handle large amounts of data efficiently and cost effectively
  • Investigate patterns in electronic communications and devise methods for deriving new insights from the data
  • Assist data scientists and data analysts to locate, extract, combine, transform, and process large data sets
  • Develop metrics, investigate data, and identify trends to make informed decisions
  • Prototype, evaluate, and iterate on software solutions to hard problems

What you bring to the team

  • Must have experience developing software in a high-uptime customer-focused environment.
  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited school in an engineering related field.
  • Must have proficient software development skills in a “back-end” data processing/server environment.
  • Experience leading projects in a technical capacity, including architecture and design as well as developing coding standards highly desired
  • Must have significant experience working with relational database systems (Postgres/Aurora/RedShift preferred.) and have experience with SQL (DML and DDL).
  • Must have the creativity, motivation, and tenacity to solve interesting and challenging problems with software.
  • Experience working with large data sets and hierarchical data formats highly desired.
  • Experience with Go/GoLang preferred; other strongly-typed languages including but not limited to Java, C#, and C will be considered but we are primarily a Go shop. Be prepared to learn Go!
  • Familiarity with AWS desired, especially: S3/SNS/SQS/RDS/RedShift/DynamoDB/Athena/EMR.
  • Knowledge, experience, or interest in how the internet works (email/SMTP/DNS in particular) valued.
  • Familiarity with machine learning (developing or integrating models) helpful.
  • Experience working with or deploying code in an AWS-based Terraform/Docker/Kubernetes/Jenkins environment helpful

Pay within these ranges varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate. The range provided may represent a candidate range and may not reflect the full range for an individual tenured employee. This role may be eligible for variable pay and/or equity. Base Pay Ranges:

SF Bay Area, New York City Metro Area:

Base Pay Range: 189,750.00 – 278,300.00 USD

California (excludes SF Bay Area), Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Washington DC Metro, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas, Washington, Virginia, and Alaska:

Base Pay Range: 158,400.00 – 232,320.00 USD

All other cities and states excluding those listed above:

Base Pay Range: 144,825.00 – 212,410.00 USD
