Lead UX Designer

Lead UX Designer

United States

F/T, Remote

Constructive, a leading social impact strategy and design firm, is seeking a Lead UX Designer with deep expertise in UX design for content-rich websites and strong people management skills.

Constructive is a close-knit, committed team of experts who partner with visionary organizations to create greater understanding about the world and help make it a more fair, equitable, and sustainable place. Our culture is built on values that are essential to who we are and how we show up—deeply held beliefs about the importance of empathy, accountability, teamwork, and respect that we look for in everyone who joins our team. If the above sounds a lot like you and you’re passionate about producing great work for purpose-led brands, then please read on.

About the Role

Please note, this is not a product or app design role. It is solely focused on User Experience Design and the role will not include any visual or UI design. Our work is overwhelmingly branding and website design, with storytelling and engagement at its core. Constructive’s Lead UX Designer will lead our UX design team and report to the Director of Strategy & User Experience to ensure that the work we co-create with clients is strategically sound, creatively inspired, and highly effective. We are looking for a skilled UX designer on a trajectory toward a director-level role with a vision that will ultimately guide and shape the company’s UX practice as it continues to evolve to meet clients’ needs.

You’ll manage and mentor our UX designers to help them continuously create stand-out work. You’ll listen to, learn from, and lead clients—facilitating UX research and assessments, leading exploratory workshops, developing data models and information architecture, creating sitemaps and wireframes, conducting usability studies, presenting work, and providing consultative guidance. You’ll collaborate with Constructive’s strategy, content, design, and engineering teams, too, ensuring that what we produce delivers results.

Your Core Responsibilities

Below are the primary activities and outcomes that Constructive’s Lead UX Designer is accountable for and by which your success and contributions will be measured.

  • Produce exceptional UX work. You and your team consistently create UX designs that meet our standards, are aligned with strategy, and continuously set the bar higher.
  • Shape our UX design practices. You ensure that the sitemaps, wireframes, and prototypes you and your team produce embody best practices and “next practices” in human-centered design, bringing new perspectives and practices to the team.
  • Lead our UX design team. You manage, mentor, and elevate our UX designers—inspiring them, strengthening their skills, and coaching them to seek greatness in their work.
  • Lead UX design workshops. You translate brand and digital strategies into collaborative client workshops that produce the foundation for mission-aligned brand experiences.
  • Lead client presentations. You present UX work persuasively, articulate how design solutions deliver on strategy while solving critical challenges, and steer conversations to balance the need to integrate client feedback with the need to advocate for effective design.
  • Collaborate across teams. You work closely with our strategy, content, design, and engineering teams to ensure the work is faithfully translated into final deliverables and wonderful, designed experiences.
  • Contribute thought leadership. You help our Marketing Lead produce thought leadership on UX design practices by sharing your ideas so that they can be turned into articles, webinars, and other content marketing.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Strong alignment with our core values.
  • At least 5 years of UX design experience, primarily in an agency setting, creating large-scale, content-rich, brand presence websites.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing and overseeing the work of other UX designers.
  • Exceptional UX design and human-centered design skills—particularly in designing high-polish wireframes and prototypes.
  • Collaborative leadership capabilities with the ability to manage designers and manage up to the Director of Strategy & User Experience for feedback and support.
  • Exceptional presentation and speaking skills—the ability to build confidence in clients, persuasively articulate our ideas without being pushy, and facilitate strategic feedback conversations.
  • An allergic reaction to mediocre work, an unrelenting eye for detail, and an insistence that any work we produce meets our highest standards and honors our clients’ trust in us.
  • Fluency with Figma and strong Adobe Creative Suite skills.
  • Proficiency in UX research, interviewing, usability testing, as well as the tools and software used to conduct and organize research.
  • Proficiency in content strategy and content design a plus.
