IT Director - Data Governance(Hybrid: Onsite & Remote)

The Director, Data Governance will be responsible for leading the development and operation of the data governance program. The role reports to the Senior Vice President, Enterprise Data. The Director, Data Governance will oversee the organization's comprehensive data governance program to ensure, operational effectiveness, controls, data quality, data integrity, timeliness, accessibility, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced functional expert to build the vision, processes and tools for a robust and effective data governance program. New Ways of Work: This IT Director, Data Governance position has been segmented as Hybrid, meaning the work is a combination of onsite and remote. This position is based out of our Rosemont, IL headquarters. You will work in the Rosemont office approximately 8 days per month. RESPONSIBILITIES In this role, we are looking for an independent self-starter who will play a key role working directly with the data stewards, enterprise data team, and leaders across US Foods. You will focus on helping the stewards define their data sets, build out their inventory of metadata across a variety of platforms, develop data policies and rules for usage and sharing as well as helping the organization adopt and implement data quality standards. You will have a balance of technology and business experience along with project leadership related work. In addition, you have a proven track record of working across large organizations with partners from a wide variety of areas. The Director, Data Governance responsibilities below are framed around key performance areas. Program and relationship management + Lead the development and implementation of the US Foods data governance management program and activities across the company + Develop and communicate vision and strategy for all data governance activities. Be the champion for data management, governance, quality, accessibility, operational efficiency, and security across the organization + Conduct annual strategic planning and budgeting for data governance program needs and objectives + Establish, organize, and implement data policies, procedures, structures, roles, responsibilities, standards, and organization that clearly outline and enforce rules of engagement, decision rights, and the accountabilities for effective data governance + Establish and grow the data governance committee + Define the data governance committee's charter, goals roles, and responsibilities + Establish metrics for program success and report on them to senior leadership. Implement and execute effective monitoring and reporting procedures to ensure the success of the program + Assess and facilitate improvement of organization's data quality and maturity level + Partner across the organization to organize a data steward community + Be an evangelist of data governance gathering support around the organization + Easily articulate the benefits of the program and its achievements + Build and maintain strong and effective relationships with all relevant internal and external stakeholders, IT, information security, Insights & Analytics, Finance, Legal, Compliance and ERM, among others + Keep abreast of changing data governance standards and requirements, including all relevant laws, rules, industry standards, company practices, and technology initiatives. Financial expertise + Understand, negotiate and own agreements for IT services and products with vendors for the program + Anticipate costs and predict the impact on the IT P&L, company EBITDA or other areas + Monitor risk, audit potential and contractual obligations Communication + Lead data governance education, drive the evolution of data governance methodologies, tools, processes, and further develop a culture of effective data governance that focuses on strategic objectives and drives value for the organization + Conduct training sessions with the data stewards on the policy, standards, and processes + Develop and deliver clear, effective, and timely updates for regulatory entities, senior management regarding data governance program effectiveness, initiatives, and issues, including all relevant metrics, dashboards, and information + Ensure coordination between projects and initiatives and data governance + Deliver challenging stakeholder communication with full ownership and integrity. When things go wrong in the program, communicate fully to stakeholders. Generate trust with a plan for how we recover + Honor colleagues by sharing responsibility of challenges and mistakes. Quickly organize to resolve and prevent in the future Talent management + Clarify roles and responsibilities for direct reports. Provide timely and appropriate feedback. Mentor the team to develop career plans and coach to achieve results + Ensure program team members, though are not direct reports, receive timely and appropriate feedback, training, and development in coordination with line managers + Mentor and develop program team members using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign and maintain accountabilities, establish clear and mutually agreed expectations, set objectives, establish priorities, and monitor and evaluate results. + Work and build support and teams within a matrixed organization. Ensure that there is a resource plan across business and technical teams for success of the program Organizational Awareness : Understand business strategy and pressures. Partner to translate those into program outcomes and incorporate into the program SUPERVISION: This position will supervise 3-5 with a mix of managers and individual contributors. Further, this position is highly matrixed and must be able influence and motivate people that are direct reports. RELATIONSHIPS Internal : This position will interact across the organization. I would need to be comfortable and capable of presenting to the Executive Leadership Team (C-level), SVPs / VPs in the field and in functions, as well as working with SMEs across the organization. Data touches all aspects of our business, and it will span the entire range. External : This position will interact with vendors evaluating technologies and aligning with internal strategy as well as evaluating performance of vendor products including contractors, consultants, software and services QUALIFICATIONS + 7-10+ years of data governance experience with increasingly progressive responsibility + 5+ years of work experience in a managerial/leadership role (i.e., managing a team, either directly or indirectly) + Functional subject matter expertise in data governance and in building and implementing effective data governance programs in large, and matrixed organizations + Experience must include implementing data governance processes, performing enterprise-wide risk/gap assessments, documenting controls and control gaps, remediating control gaps, and maintaining a coordinated and comprehensive data governance program + A solid understanding of the impact, implementation, and governance surrounding data privacy regulations including CCPA, CPRA and other customer protection and privacy policies + Familiarity with data management tools such as metadata management, business glossary (e.g., Alation, Collibra) data scanning and quality + Ability to set a clear vision for the data governance program and to successfully execute the vision + Strong leadership, people management, and matrixed influencing skills required + Strong program and project management skills and experience required + Ability to build and generate business cases, develop, and apply relevant metrics, and evaluate return on investment (ROI), quantitatively and qualitatively + Demonstrated leadership, ability to drive results and engage senior executives, as well as ability to influence cross-organizational stakeholders and decision-makers with different operational responsibilities + Proven track record of thought leadership, building consensus, and leveraging relationships to achieve strategic objectives and to create an effective data governance culture + Ability to independently lead the function with minimal supervision and direction, and to effectively translate theoretical concepts into practical, easy-to-understand milestones/activities + Strong ability to influence at all levels of the organization, including executive management, auditors, employees, customers, and vendors + Ability to deal well with ambiguity and complex situations + Strong independent judgment, discretion, critical, and analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills required + Strong executive polish and presence required Education/Training: Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Finance, or a related field EOE Race/Color/Religion/Sex/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity/National Origin/Protected Veteran/Disability Status US Foods is one of America's great food companies and a leading foodservice distributor, partnering with approximately 300,000 restaurants and foodservice operators to help their businesses succeed.
